How Honest Are You?
Let’s make sure we tell the truth
by Hannah Taylor
Suitable for Whole School (Pri)
Aims
To consider the importance of honesty, how it can strengthen relationships, build good values and help with communication and responsibility.
Preparation and materials
- You will need the PowerPoint slides accompanying this assembly (How Honest Are You?) and the means to display them.
- You will need the YouTube clip ‘Telling the Truth-Songs for Kids’ and the means to show it. This can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Sl7LhaZD8
Assembly
- Start the assembly by playing the YouTube clip ‘Telling the Truth-Songs for Kids’. This can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Sl7LhaZD8
- Explain that today's assembly is all about honesty and telling the truth. This is very important for building trust with the people in our lives. It’s also a great way to show kindness.
- Ask the question: How would it make you feel if a friend broke your toy and lied, saying they didn’t break it?
Listen to a range of responses. - Ask the question: If you copied a friend's idea and pretended it was your idea, how do you think your friend would feel?
Listen to a range of responses. - Not being honest can lead to people not trusting or respecting us. They may not want to share with us or play with us, which would be very sad.
- Let’s do a quiz together and see how much we know about honesty.
Go through the slide show, discussing each slide in turn. - From this slideshow we have learnt that, to be honest, we should:
- Tell the truth, even if we feel worried or scared to do so.
- Never steal or cheat.
- If someone hurts us or makes us feel uncomfortable, tell an adult.
- Take responsibility for your actions.
- Admit when you do something wrong.
Time for reflection
Let’s pause to consider the following questions. Let’s try to be honest with ourselves.
Can you think of a time when you were not honest or when someone was not honest with you?
Pause to allow time for reflection.
Did you get in trouble or hurt someone's feelings, or were your feelings hurt?
Pause to allow time for reflection.
Did it make you feel sad inside?
Pause to allow time for reflection.
Do you think it is important to tell the truth?
Pause to allow time for reflection.
Telling the truth is not always easy. However, when we tell the truth, people grow in respect for us. They learn that we are trustworthy. They learn that we are good friends.
As we start a new school year. Let’s be determined to tell the truth in the coming year.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you for our friends and family,
Please help us to be truthful in what we say and do,
And follow in your footsteps.
Amen.
