Assembly

  1. Hello, trainee superheroes! Our mission is to save our planet, so we need to find out how we can do this and take action.

But first, we must make our own superhero names. Can you think of one? If not, use our clever chart.

Show the image of the superhero name chart.

Find the first letter of your first name and your last name to discover your new superhero name!

  2. Next, we need to think about who we’re going to save the planet with. Our friends? Family? Neighbours? Let’s think of who we can get involved in our mission. What would our costumes look like?

  3. Great! Now that we’ve got that sorted, let’s think about the main threats to our planet. Who are the villains we need to fight?

The earth is being threatened and it’s our job to shield it. Watch out for meteors! Put your hands up like shields and protect our planet. There are many dangers, and some of them we don’t see.

Pollution comes from our transport, our factories and even our household cleaning products. How can we stop it? Does anyone have any ideas?

Listen to a range of responses.

We can all help to reduce pollution by walking or travelling by bus or train rather than by car. We can also plant more trees and plants to increase oxygen, and buy from shops that work hard to keep their pollution low.

As humans, we make a lot of rubbish, and it can end up in a really big pile. The rubbish is also dangerous to wildlife, because animals may get trapped by it or try to eat it. So, how can we reduce our rubbish? Well, we can recycle as much of it as we can, so that the materials we use can be made into more items. We can also choose not to buy too much plastic because some types of plastic can’t be recycled. We can give old toys and clothes to charity too, instead of throwing them in the bin.

Climate change has caused our world to get hotter, and it has happened through actions that humans have taken, such as burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees and overfarming crops and animals. Climate change is making the world a more dangerous place for humans, wildlife and the planet. But it’s not too late. By working together, we can all help. Our planet needs us!

  4. Now it’s time for us to choose our superpowers.

Flight will enable us to fly down to parts of the earth and remove waste and litter. While we’re there, we can plant seeds for new plants and trees.
    - Super-speed will ensure that we can speed-walk to school, the park and the shops. We don’t need a car!
    - We can use our super-strength to lift up all those animals and keep them safe from litter and waste. Can you lift a whale or a gorilla?
X-Ray vision will enable us to find pollution and put a stop to it.

  5. Show the YouTube video ‘The Earth song’ by the StoryBots (1.56 minutes long).

Time for reflection

Our world is a beautiful place, filled with wonderful nature, wildlife and people. There are over eight billion of us on Earth, so if we all work together, we can keep our planet beautiful and safe, and also protect our animals.

Encourage the children to think about what they can do at school and at home to help save our planet.

You may wish to encourage the children to discuss this in groups, and then share their ideas.

Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you for our beautiful world.
Thank you for giving us life so that we can enjoy it.
Please help us to protect and conserve our world.
Amen.
