Pause for Thought: What Do You See?

Life is like a tapestry

by the Revd Guy Donegan-Cross

Suitable for Whole School (Pri)

Aims

To consider the importance of looking beneath the surface.

Preparation and materials

  • You will need the PowerPoint slides that accompany this assembly (What Do You See?) and the means to display them.
  • Optional: if possible, have a real piece of cross-stitch or tapestry to show the children.

Assembly

  1. Ask the children what they understand by tapestry or cross-stitch.

Listen to a range of responses.

  2. Explain that both tapestry and cross-stitch involve using a needle and thread to make a picture. Tapestry is created by weaving thread on a loom; cross-stitch uses two threads that cross over each other and is usually sewn in a frame.

    Show Slides 1 and 2.

  3. Ask the children whether they have ever tried doing cross-stitch or tapestry, or if they have seen people producing it.

  4. Show Slide 3.

Ask the children what they think of the picture.

Listen to a range of responses.

  5. Show Slide 4.

Ask the children what they think of this picture.

Listen to a range of responses.

  6. Show Slide 5.

Explain that the pictures show the front and back of a tapestry. The back looks very messy, but the front looks beautiful.

Time for reflection

Explain that we all have times when we look fine on the outside, but on the inside, things are not going well. Everyone thinks that we are OK and don’t have any problems, but inside, we feel all messy.

Point out that when we feel like this, it’s important to talk to someone about it. Often, someone can help, but even if they can’t do anything to solve our problems, it usually helps to talk and have someone listen.

Remind the children about people in school who are available to listen to them. Encourage them to talk rather than bottling things up.

Prayer
Dear God,
Thank you for people who are there to listen to us.
Please help us to seek good advice when we feel worried.
Please help us to be good listeners to other people.
Thank you that you are always there for us to talk to.
Amen.
