You Are Unique

Each of us is special and unique

by Helen Redfern (revised, originally published in 2010)

Suitable for Whole School (Pri)

Aims

To remind us that we are special and unique.

Preparation and materials

  • Optional: you may wish to play the song ‘Good to be me’ at the end of the assembly, in which case you will also need the means to do so. It is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igmU0b65WCU and is 2.51 minutes long.

Assembly

  1. Ask all of the children to stand up. Explain that you are going to read out various statements. If the statement describes the child, they should sit down. If the statement does not apply to them, they should remain standing.

Allow enough time for the children to sit down between each statement.

    Read out the following statements.

    - Sit down if you have brown hair.
    - Sit down if you wear glasses.
    - Sit down if you have curly hair.
    - Sit down if you have brown eyes.
    - Sit down if you are a boy.
    - Sit down if you have lost a tooth.
    - Sit down if you have a birthmark.

Keep going with suggestions like these until only one child is left standing. Invite this child out to the front.

  2. Introduce the child, pointing out that they are very special. Explain that, because they were the only one left standing at the end of all of the statements, it means that there is no one else like them in the whole room! That means that they are very special.

  3. Not only that, there is no one else the same as this child in the whole country and even in the whole world! In fact, we could travel all over the world and we would never find someone who is exactly the same as we are. That is mind-blowing.

  4. Even more amazing is that all the way through history, from the time human beings first walked on the Earth, there has never been anyone else created the same as us . . . and there never will be. Just as the child at the front is special, so are we, for there is only one of each of us. We are all unique. That makes us all absolutely wonderful and very, very special.

Ask the volunteer to return to their place.

  5. Listen to this poem about how special each of us is.

    You may not feel beautiful.
    You may not feel special.
    You may not feel wonderful.
    But you are.

    You are special.
There’s no one quite like you.
    You are unique.
There is only one of you.

Nobody has the same fingerprints as you.
Nobody has the same pattern of freckles as you.
Nobody has the same teeth as you.
Nobody has a birthmark in the same place as you.

    You are special.
There’s no one quite like you.
    You are unique.
There is only one of you.

No one else can laugh your laugh.
No one else can cry your tears.
No one else can smile your smile.
No one else can sneeze your sneeze.

    You are special.
There’s no one quite like you.
    You are unique.
There is only one of you.

  6. Sometimes, though, we are sad. We wish that we were someone else. We don’t want to be us. We want to be taller. We want our hair to be a different colour. We want to be better at reading. We want to be better at sport.

It is good to be reminded at these times just how special we are.

Time for reflection

We all need people in our lives who make us feel special and loved. People who encourage us and tell us that we matter. It might be a parent or a grandparent, a friend or a neighbour, a football coach or a dancing teacher, a teacher or a play leader.

Let’s take a moment to think about someone who makes us feel special and give thanks for that person in our hearts. If you feel like you don’t have anyone who makes you feel special, why not talk to a teacher about it?

Light a candle and then ask the children to look quietly around them.

Prayer
Dear God,
Everyone we see is unique.
Thank you that you have made us all different.
Thank you that I am unique.
We are all unique.
We are all special.
Amen.
