Aim

To celebrate the New Year.



Preparation and materials

• Read through the poem.
• Some calming music would be useful for the reflection at the end.

Assembly

1. Teach the children the following simple refrain:
   
   New Year is here
   Clap in the New Year.
   
   Explain that they can all join in with these words whenever they hear them and that the number of claps will increase with each verse of the poem. Practise the first two verses, then go back to the beginning and do the whole thing.
   
   One thing is clear
   As we start the New Year.
   
   (All) New Year is here
   Clap in the New Year. (1 clap)
   
   Two things are true
   Joy to me and to you.
   
   (All) New Year is here
   Clap in the New Year. (2 claps)
   
   Three things under the sun
   Smiles, fun, joy to everyone.
   
   (All) New Year is here

   New start, new school term
