We Can Do This

To celebrate talents and skills that we can share together.

by Gordon and Ronni Lamont

Suitable for Key Stage 1

Aims

To celebrate talents and skills that we can share together.

Preparation and materials

  • None.

Assembly

  1. Ask if anyone can touch a finger to their nose (demonstrate). Hopefully everyone will be able to! Ask if anyone can touch a finger to their nose making the finger fly through the air first (demonstrate describing a path through the air - not too big or children will not have enough room!). Repeat the above, asking for a 'ping' sound on the end.

  2. Explain that now everyone is warmed up and ready to go, you're going to read an action poem that you want everyone to join in with. They'll need to listen carefully to find out what the actions are.

    Here is my finger
It can fly through the air
    And land on my nose
    Just right there - ping!

    Here is my finger
    It can wiggle about
Sometimes it's in (finger drops down)
And sometimes it's out. (finger points up)

    Here is my hand
    It's waving to you
    Sometimes there's one
And sometimes two. (both hands wave)

I can point at my face
I can point to the floor
I can point to the sky
    And here's something more

    If I point all around
Everywhere I see (point to eyes)
Many, many children (three quick points in different directions)
Doing just the same as me! (point to self)

  3. Explain that it can be fun to do things together. Ask for examples, such as singing, sport and dancing. Sometimes we have to work hard to do things together well. Sometimes we need to practise. If appropriate, repeat the poem, trying to 'get it together' better.

Time for reflection

Dear God,
Thank you for times when we can enjoy doing things with other people.
In a time of quiet, think to yourself of what you like to do best with other people.
Thank you for fun together, for singing together,
for playing together, for being together.
Amen.
