Welcoming a new year seven (b)

> Aim
To welcome a new year group and focus on their importance in the life of the school.



> Assembly

  1. Charlie lived for 12 years, which is quite a good age for a goldfish. Charlie's owner won him at a fairground and he was brought home in a plastic bag full of water. On arrival he was transferred to the goldfish bowl where he lived contentedly, on his own, for about eight years. At first he was less than two inches long, but by the time he was eight years old he had grown to be about six inches long, almost too big for the goldfish bowl.
  2. Then, one day, something unusual happened. Charlie's owner move to a new house with a large garden and a goldfish pond in which there were already several goldfish. As Charlie was too large now for his bowl, he was transferred to the much larger garden pond.

  3. At first he remained still, on the bottom of the pond, not knowing where to go, but after a while he began to find his way around, and within a day or two he was swimming happily with the other fish, exploring the pond and getting used to his new surroundings.
  4. In life, we sometimes have similar experiences. When we move to new surroundings it sometimes takes a little time to settle in. At first things seem very strange. It is like this for you as you move from junior school to this secondary school. You may have been used to being like Charlie, a large fish in a small bowl. Perhaps you had important jobs to do, helping to organize the school and looking after younger pupils. Now you discover that everyone is older than you. You have become the small fish in the large pond.

  5. Don't think, however, that you are not important. We all have our part to play in the smooth running of the school. It will not take long before you feel at home and part of your new year group with new friends and exciting new things to do.
  6. We are all important to the life of the school. Pupils of whatever year group, and teachers and other staff too, all belong to the community of this school. We should never feel insignificant or unimportant. We all have our part to play in the smooth running of this community.

    Lord,
    we're not the first new students at this school,
    we're not the first people to be frightened,
    we're not the first people to be nervous,
    we're not the first people to lose our way in the corridors;
    we won't be the last.
    But for the time being,
    help us to be brave,
    help us to make friends,
    help us to stay calm.
    You're the biggest fish of all –
    please remember us tiddlers!
