COMMUNITY By Gill O'Neill
Suitable
for KS2 Aim
To develop the idea of the school
as a caring community.
Preparation and materials
- An OHP or flip-chart showing the names of clubs that the children (and
staff) may belong to, and pen.
Assembly
- Share with the children any groups or clubs that you belong to, e.g.
choir, gym, family, etc. Ask the children if any of them belong to a club or
group. Ask volunteers to give examples.
- Turn on the OHP or show the flip-chart. If you like, add the names of
any suggested groups that don't already appear.
- Point out that all these groups are very different from each other,
but they do have one thing in common. All the people who belong to each group
share the same interest. For example, all the people in the guitar group want
to learn to play the guitar. All the children in the football team enjoy
playing football. All the children in the choir enjoy singing.
- There is one community or group that isn't on the list. Tell the
children that it's something that you yourself belong to and is very important
to you. Can anyone guess what it is? After a few guesses tell them that in fact
they are all members of this particular community - give the name of the
school. We may all be different ages, and some have had membership a lot longer
than others; some are members because they choose to be, others don't have a
choice. However we came to be here, each and every one is an important member
of this school, sharing our time together.
Time for
reflection
Lord God, We all belong to a
number of different communities, clubs and groups. We pray for all the
people we know in these groups, the leaders and all the members, as well
as ourselves. We thank you for all those who care for us, our families
and our friends, and for our school. Amen.
