AUTUMN COLOURS
By Gill Hartley

Suitable for Whole School

Aims

To reflect on the colours of autumn and to give thanks for the beauty of the natural world.

Preparation and materials
  • Autumn leaves of various colours, if possible.
  • Large sheets of coloured paper - one sheet each of yellow, red, brown, orange, blue, purple and green.
  • Blu-tack and large felt marker.
For optional extension to assembly:
  • A copy of either Why is The Sky Blue? by Sally Grindley and Susan Varley (Andersen Press, ISBN 0 862 64691 X) or A Song of Colours by Judy Hindley and Mike Bostock (Walker Books, ISBN 0 744 66332 1).
Assembly
  1. Ask the children, what is happening to the trees? If you have them, show the autumn leaves you have brought in. List the colours the leaves have turned/will turn, i.e. yellow, red, brown, orange.

  2. Ask the children to think of other autumnal things which are these colours, e.g.
    Yellow: sunshine
    Red: apples, rosehips
    Brown: conkers, ploughed fields
    Orange: pumpkins, the sun
As each thing is suggested, write it on the appropriately coloured sheet of paper.

  3. Ask the children to think of other colours of autumn, e.g.
    Blue: sky
    Purple: plums, blackberries
Green: what stays green in autumn?
Again, as each thing is suggested, write it on the appropriately coloured sheet of paper.

  4. Ask for volunteers to help you stick the sheets up with Blu-tack where they can be seen by everyone. Use the sheets as a basis for a responsive prayer, going through the list on each sheet. Read out each item with its colour, saying, for example,
    For red apples ...
    For yellow sunshine ...
and ask the children to respond after each phrase with the words We say thank you.
Time for reflection
Dear God,
For the beautiful world all around us,
for its many wonders and all its colours,
we give thanks.
Help us to care about all the wonderful things around us
and to take the time to enjoy them.
Help us to preserve and protect all that is in the world
so that everyone can enjoy them, too.

Amen.
Song

'Autumn Days' (Come and Praise, 4)

Optional extension to assembly

If you wish to extend the assembly you could read Why is The Sky Blue? by Sally Grindley and Susan Varley, which deals with the wonder of the colours of the natural world. Alternatively, with older children you might like to read some of the poems in A Song of Colours by Judy Hindley and Mike Bostock.
